The Off-the-Shelf PC Illusion: What's Really Inside?

Pre-built PCs from big-box stores look like a bargain, but the savings come at your expense: entry-level motherboards, uncertified PSUs, anonymous components.

PC motherboard repair at Il Garage dei PC

Every week someone brings me a PC bought a few months ago from a major retailer, with problems that shouldn't exist on a new machine. The story is always the same: declining performance, overheating, components failing before their time.

The PSU Problem

This is the component that pre-built PC manufacturers almost always cut corners on. A quality power supply costs €80–120. A "budget" one can cost €20. The difference? Energy certification, overvoltage and short-circuit protection, internal component quality.

A cheap PSU is a real risk: when it fails, it can take the motherboard, RAM, and sometimes even the CPU and GPU with it. I've seen €800 PCs destroyed by a €25 power supply.

The Locked-Down Entry-Level Motherboard

To keep costs down, pre-built PCs often use motherboards with limited upgrade paths. Got a Ryzen 5 and want to move to a Ryzen 7? The board might not support it — or it might, but only with a BIOS update the manufacturer will never release.

The result: when the PC starts showing its age, you can't upgrade it — you have to buy a whole new machine.

RAM and SSD: Numbers That Don't Tell the Whole Story

"16GB RAM" sounds great on a price tag. But they don't tell you it's DDR4 at 2666 MHz in single-channel instead of dual-channel, with high latencies. "512GB SSD" can mean a slow SATA drive no faster than a modern hard disk — not an NVMe.

Official benchmarks are measured under optimal conditions — not in real-world use.

The No-Name Components

Fans, heatsinks, cables — often from brands that don't exist outside this PC's production chain. No support, no guaranteed replacement parts, no technical documentation. When they break (and they do), you can't find the spares.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • ▸PSU brand and model — must have at least 80 PLUS Bronze certification
  • ▸SSD type — NVMe M.2 > SATA M.2 > 2.5" SATA
  • ▸RAM — dual-channel (2 slots populated) and ≥ 3200 MHz for modern systems
  • ▸Motherboard — look up the chipset, not just the brand name
  • ▸CPU cooler — if it's not specified, assume it's the bare minimum

My Alternative

For the same budget as an off-the-shelf PC, I can build you a machine with components chosen one by one, all guaranteed and upgradeable. No anonymous parts. No risky PSU. And I explain every decision before anything is purchased.
