PS3 Fat: you ask for a repaste, I give you back a console that lasts

Deep cleaning and repaste on a PS3 Fat — then the multimeter on the CMOS battery. It was almost dead.

Opened PS3 Fat on the work mat, fan and frame exposed

When you bring me a PS3 Fat that sounds like a plane taking off, the goal is to bring temperatures down. But once it's on the bench, my way of working kicks in: I can't ignore what others overlook.

The CMOS battery

I was deep-cleaning and repasting a classic Fat. I could have stopped there. Instead, as always, I grabbed the multimeter and measured the CMOS battery. It was almost dead. Replacing it takes seconds with the console open — noticing it takes a different mindset.

Why I do it

  • ▸I don't want to see you again in six months — with a console that loses the clock or throws sync errors.
  • ▸Every millimetre checked — that's the point.

What I do on a PS3

  • ▸Deep cleaning and repaste — full teardown and high-performance paste.
  • ▸Delid on Fat models — paste applied directly on the Cell and RSX dies.
  • ▸NEC/TOKIN capacitors — often linked to YLoD.
  • ▸PSU, drive and video — Blu-ray lens, HDMI/AV outputs, board micro-soldering.
