PS4 loud as a jet? Fossilised paste and baked-in dust
Pump-out, dried paste and the felt effect: what happens inside your PS4 and how I fix it.
If your PS4 — Standard, Slim or Pro — sounds like a jet engine, shuts down with a blinking light or lost its TV signal, a quick dust-off won't do.
Fossilised paste and pump-out
Unlike the PS5, the PS4 uses regular thermal paste and silicone pads. Years of heavy gaming dry the paste like chalk and pump-out pushes it off the chip: heat builds up, the fan hits 100%, thermal shutdown follows.

My fix: full teardown, chemical cleaning, high-conductivity paste and new pads where needed.
A can of air is an illusion
Household dust is fibres, skin and humidity that heat bakes into a felt between the heatsink fins. The fan spins, the air doesn't pass. I take the PS4 apart screw by screw and clean the heatsink fin by fin, then lubricate the fan.

Other typical PS4 faults
- ▸Internal PSU — dead console or tripping breaker: SMD fuses, varistors, switching parts.
- ▸Blu-ray drive — not reading or not ejecting.
- ▸HDMI port — no signal: micro-soldered replacement.
- ▸DualShock 4 — stick drift and worn charging ports.
