PS5 vertical or horizontal? What happens to the liquid metal
Liquid metal physics, migration risk and the rules for placing your console so it lasts.
The PS5 position debate is all over hardware forums. Sony designed it to work both ways, but liquid metal physics and airflow make horizontal the technically safer choice.
The physics: migration risk
- ▸Vertical — if the seal or heatsink pressure isn't perfectly even, the metal can pool towards the lower edge and leave the hot spot uncovered — that's how dry spots start.
- ▸Horizontal — gravity acts evenly across the chip: the lowest long-term risk.
How to place it
- ▸Always use the stand — it lifts the case for fresh air.
- ▸15-20 cm clearance — especially at the back.
- ▸Solid surfaces — never carpets or fabric.
- ▸Free airflow — don't blow the exhaust into a nearby wall.
Maintenance beats position
If yours has been vertical for months and runs fine, don't panic. But if the fan gets loud or games crash from heat, going horizontal is the first free fix — and a real internal cleaning is the second.
