The Difference Between a "Quick Clean" and a Professional PC Service
Most shops just blast compressed air and call it done. At the Garage we follow a workshop-grade protocol: full heatsink cleaning, certified thermal paste, post-service temperature telemetry.
"I already had it cleaned" — one of the most common things I hear. Then I open the case and find heatsinks still full of dust, thermal paste grey and dry as concrete. It's not your fault: the "cleaning" you got wasn't really one.
What Most Shops Do
The standard procedure at many service centers: open the case, blast compressed air everywhere, close it back up. Five minutes of work, looks clean visually. But the dust was moved, not removed. The CPU heatsink fins are still clogged. The thermal paste is still three years old.
The PC comes back "clean" and a week later it's running hot again.
My Protocol at the Garage
I treat every PC the way a mechanic treats an engine:
01
Full disassembly
Heatsinks, fans and RAM modules are removed. I don't clean "around" components — everything comes apart.
02
Mechanical heatsink cleaning
Every heatsink fin is cleaned with professional compressed air at controlled pressure — not spray cans.
03
Old thermal paste removal
The old paste is removed with proper solvents (pure isopropanol or ArctiClean). No residue left behind.
04
Certified thermal paste application
I use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or professional equivalent. The amount and technique matter — too much is as bad as too little.
05
Fan inspection
I check for unusual sounds, rotation speed, and bearing wear. If a fan is about to fail, I tell you upfront.
06
Post-service telemetry
I boot the PC and measure temperatures under real load with HWMonitor or similar. If something looks off, the case stays open.
How Long Does a Professional Service Take?
About 45–90 minutes depending on the PC. It's not a job you rush — and if someone tells you they do it in 10 minutes, they're just doing the "quick blast."
How Often?
Desktop in a normal environment: every 2–3 years. Laptop: every 1–2 years. Dusty environments or homes with pets: every year. If your PC is over 5 years old and has never been opened, bring it in now.
